Everything so far: Put It Together Again, Oscar Alfonso, 2016

Everything so far consists of the plinth This was the right choice, and five postcards: That’s different, It’s just a thought, Always within grasp, Put It Together Again, and There’s another way.

Through the use of repetition, this installation involves the simultaneous creation, distortion, and destruction of meaning. This was the right choice takes the plinth as both a material choice for presentation, and as a symbolic representation of art education. Taking postcards as a medium for sharing experiences and knowledge, much as the conference format does, the postcard series utilizes short statements which are ambiguously personal, and yet distant. The statements refer to processes of learning and repetition which are central to the mastering of a craft, and the educational institution more broadly, while also hinting at an underlying personal anxiety beneath these processes. Free to take, the postcards allow the conference guests to take a physical component of the conference home, mirroring their ability to learn and take knowledge and experiences home  with them.

Everything so far was exhibited in the FCAT Undergraduate Conference 2016 ‘Craft,’ at the Surrey City Hall in Surrey, BC.
