Framing the entrance of the exhibit, the installation consisted of the repetition of the handwritten phrase “This is not the space for honesty.” Taking the wall as a personal physical space within the context of a university graduating show, it is an act of laying claim to that space and questioning the limitations of both the show and personal expression.

Through the use of repetition, this installation involves the simultaneous creation, distortion, and destruction of meaning. The phrase carries an ambiguously personal and yet distant voice that references the act of writing lines, the repetitive processes of learning and memorization, and the internal reinforcement of ideas we seek to convince ourselves of. Written small, by hand, and with pencil, it is an idea that can be easily overlooked, or simply smudged out. In the process This is not the space for honesty subverts the graduating show as a venue for visibility and the showcasing of achievements.

This is not the space for honesty was exhibited in the 2016 SFU BFA Graduating Exhibition _____________, and a space at the Audain Gallery in Vancouver, BC.
