Context:

In Circulation is a volunteer organized and curated photographic exhibition that forms part of the 2017 Capture Photography Festival. This student curated show marks the inaugural participation in the festival, with a group exhibition, by the School for the Contemporary Arts. It joins an existing partnership with by the school for student curated installations as part of Capture’s Canada Line Public Art Program.

The exhibition was organized with the financial support of the Simon Fraser Student Society, and the logistical and advisory support of the School for the Contemporary Arts. In Circulation is the result of an open call within SFU’s Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, and an ensuing collaborative curatorial process. This show draws inspiration from the first-year campus project which encourages engagement with the university site as a site for artistic intervention.

Curated by Oscar Alfonso and Joni Cheung, In Circulation consists of 12 site specific projects located on the 1000 – 4000 levels of the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts and features the work of: asmaa al-issa, Patrick Blenkarn, Jessica Chu, Stephanie Gagne, Phoebe Huang, Danyal Imani, A Yeong Kim, Ruilan King, Siena Locher-Lo, Dustin Patar, Tyler Pengelly, Rui Rui Sun, Kalvin Valko, Sophie Van den Biggelaar.

Curatorial Statement:

Taking the university as a site of learning, instruction, and experimentation, In Circulation examines the university as a public site for the deconstruction and reconstruction of knowledge. As post-secondary study fosters the development of new modes of seeing and relating to one another, we’ve found ourselves questioning our modes of thinking and perception. In the process, we discover new ways of thinking, but also new modes of interpersonal organization and production. This personal process presents an opportunity for expanded perspectives, and the potential as well, for an expanded understanding of our own relationship to this site.

For some of us, it is a new home. For others, an old one. Installed throughout SFU at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, In Circulation comprises twelve photographic projects and interventions that engage with the School for the Contemporary Arts. This spatial arrangement across four oors, experienced in whole or in part, presents multiple perspectives that expose this relationship. These unique relationships have been built in pieces, in fits and starts, in incomplete thoughts. So we invite you to join us, and examine our participating artists’ movements through time, the university, and the changing circumstances of our (un)shared experiences.

— Oscar Alfonso & Joni Cheung

Curatorial Project:

In Circulation included thirteen small cards which contain excerpts of writings on photography and the image. These excerpts engage with the literature of photography, and with the university as a site of learning and discourse where knowledge may be taken, rejected, or consumed. Free to take in any combination, the cards are also an invitation for the exhibition visitor to add to their own understanding of photography. They allow visitors to take a piece of the exhibit home, and each visitor’s selection will vary in much the same way that the exhibition experience varies from visitor to visitor.
